چکیده
Excellent mechanical and isotropic optical properties are achieved simultaneously from fully dense polycrystalline advanced alumina ceramics with a hexagonal crystal structure, which optically anisotropic. A small amount (240 ppm) of ZrO2 additive is used to synthesize the transparent an average grain size 0.7 µm, locally detected distortion (birefringence) extremely minimized, less than 20 nm/pass. Total transmittance (86%) (thickness = 0.3 mm) in ultraviolet (UV) infrared (IR) regions similar that commercial c-axis sapphire single crystals produced by Czochralski (CZ) method, while extinction ratio visible wavelength area over 25 dB. Like glass crystals, can clearly display texts images on liquid (LCD) screens. boundary phase nano-sized Al2O3–ZrO2 composition (amorphous) formed at ceramics, enhances four-point bending strength fracture toughness (KIC) 921 MPa 6.8 MPa·m0.5, respectively, hence superior those crystals.

Mullite-alumina functionally gradient ceramics
Cracks free mullite-alumina Functionally Gradient Ceramics (FGC) have been obtained by sequential slip casting of Mullite-alumina slurries with diserent mullite/alumina ratios. These slurries were prepared with 65 % solids content and viscosities rangingpom 10 to 40 mPa.s. 7he presence of cracks perpendicular to the FGC layers have been attributed to residual stresses developed because of the m...
متن کاملOptical properties of isotropic chiral media
A review is given of the optical properties of isotropic chiral media, based on the symmetrized constitutive relations of Condon. The review includes discussion of wave propagation in chiral media, and derivation of the reflection and transmission amplitudes of an isotropic optically active medium, and of a layer resting on a substrate. Boundary conditions and energy conservation relations are ...
متن کاملAlumina reinforced eucryptite ceramics : very low thermal expansion material with improved mechanical properties
Composite materials formed by a LAS matrix reinforced with second phases are promising materials in many applications where better mechanical properties than those corresponding to conventional low thermal expansion coefficient materials are required. In this study we will show the capability of the design of a LAS-alumina submicron composite. The main scope of this work is to test the sinterab...
متن کاملSurface Contamination of Alumina Ceramics by Carbon
Article history: Received: 01.05.2016. Received in revised form: 25.07.2016. Accepted: 06.09.2016. This study presents the results of investigating the cause of contamination of aluminum oxide ceramics (Al2O3) in the form of brown colored stain. Contaminated ceramic surfaces were examined with the scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with the Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS). The res...
متن کاملHertzian Contact Damage in Porous Alumina Ceramics
A study has been made of Hertzian contact damage in compressive shear stress field beneath the contact area. The observed microcrack density increases with grain size, porous and dense liquid-phase-sintered aluminas. Indentation stress–strain curves show increasing nonlinearity as the implying a threshold microstructural scale for crack initiation. In contrast, the micromechanisms controlling f...
